Celebrate National Book Lovers Day in Style

If you didn’t know, August 9th is National Book Lovers Day. It’s not an “official holiday,” which means that unless you work for an extremely literary-focused employer, you won’t get the day off. But, it’s still a fun day to celebrate your love of literature.

So, in honor of today, here are some ideas of what you can do to celebrate.

10 Ways to Celebrate National Book Lovers Day

1. Re-Read Your Favorite Childhood Book

Do you remember where your love of reading started? Most of us have a book (or two) we read over and over again as a kid, a book we stayed up late reading under the covers with a flashlight. Take a stroll down memory lane today and re-read that childhood favorite.

2. Support a Local Bookstore

Yes, you can get all your books on Amazon now – which is super convenient – but they don’t need your patronage as much as those smaller bookstores. So in honor of National Book Lovers Day, head to your local bookstore and show some support to small businesses.

3. Gift Someone You Love with Your Favorite Novel

Books are always a nice gift, but even nicer is when you give someone you love a copy of your favorite book. For those of you in a relationship, this can be an especially sweet and romantic gesture to do for your partner. As an added bonus, maybe write a thoughtful note to them in the cover.

4. Start a Bookclub

Bookclubs are a TON of fun – not only do you get to read more books (and expand your reading habits), you get to hang out once a month with a group of friends. Throw in some wine and snacks and you have yourself a party! So, ask a few of your literary gal pals if they’re interested and see if you can’t start a new bookclub!

5. Watch a Movie Adaptation

Books are always better, it’s true. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy watching the movie (or TV show) adaptation of that book you loved reading. One of my all-time favorite screen adaptations is Gone Girl. For those of you with HBO or Hulu, Big Little Lies is also a good show to try.

6. Re-Stock Your Shelves

You can never have too many books. So, go ahead and treat yourself today with some new ones! Or – if you’re not wanting to spend a lot – you can browse through your nearest library and borrow some new ones.

7. Spend the Day at a Coffee Shop

Grab a book you love (or a new one you want to start) and head to a coffee shop for a relaxing day of reading.

Coffee shops have an inherently cozy atmosphere making it a great place to read, write, or just people watch!

You could also do this at a park, though, if you want to read outdoors.

8. Try an Audio-Book

I’ve recently discovered audio-books, and while I do prefer reading a book to listening to one, I’d still recommend trying it. You can even sign up for a free 30-day trial with Audible.

9. Make a Reading Goal for Yourself

Maybe you want to read at least 3 books a month. Or you want to tackle that list of classic literature to mark it off your To-Be-Read list. Take some time today and come up with a good reading goal for yourself. And, for next years National Book Lovers Day, you can celebrate achieving your goal!

10. Write!

Finally – if you’re a writer, take today and try and write a book of your own. Ok, maybe not a book – but you can write something. Poetry, a blog post, a short story – even a book review! Use your imagination and go wild!

Conclusion

Whatever you decide to do today, I hope you have a wonderful “holiday”!

These are great suggestions! I love reading and honestly don’t feel like I have as much time to read these days. I really want to get my own Little Free Library to be able to share some of my books with others in my neighborhood. Thanks for this post!
