Hello friends! Last week, I talked about my first time trying epilation.

As much as Epilating does hurt, I’d still recommend it over waxing any day.

With that in mind, I wanted to share my top 8 Epilation Tips- you’re certainly not going to eliminate all pain, but you can make it more comfortable and get better results.

Top 8 Tips For Trying Epilation

1. Get the Right Epilator For You

As with any type of hair-removal method, you need to find what works best for you. Do some research on the kind of epilator you think would work best for you – certain epilators are made specifically for sensitive skin, for example, and then go from there.

This is the epilator I’ve been using for the past month and a half and so far, I’ve been really loving it.

Unlike razors, epilators do tend to be fairly expensive. Personally, I think it’s worth the investment in something of high quality, but there are more affordable ones if you just want to dip your toe in the water.

**This is the one I use!

**Cheapest one on the list

2. Epilate at Night

This is especially important if you’re new to epilation or if you have sensitive skin. Now that I’ve been doing it for over a month, it doesn’t leave my skin as red afterwards, but the first time I tried it, there was a rash similar to razor burn (don’t worry – that’s totally normal!)

Epilating at night will help ensure that you don’t have uncomfortable or unsightly bumps during the day.

3. Prep Your Skin

Prior to use, make sure that the epilator is clean. Your skin, too should be completely clean and dry (if you’re using it in the shower, this obviously won’t apply.) One really big tip is to take a warm shower ahead of time as the warm water will work to make your hair softer and open the pores up more.

Finally, I’ve recently started using an antiseptic on my skin ahead of time and it’s been a life-saver! Yes, it still hurts, but I’ve definitely noticed a huge difference in the amount of pain. Plus, it serves to make sure my skin is perfectly clean too!

4. Epilate while Laying Down

Almost all epilators can be used in the shower, too, but I’d advise epilating dry instead. If you can, epilate while laying down – it will be easier on you pain wise, plus it does take a bit of time, at least at first. Since you don’t use shaving cream ahead of time, I don’t see a reason to put yourself in more discomfort by doing it in the shower.

5. Pull Skin tight & Go in Opposite Direction of Hair Growth

You’ve probably heard this one for shaving too, but it’s even more important when epilating. You need to pull your skin super tight so that the epilator can glide over it more easily.

You also need to try to epilate in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Yes, it hurts more that way, but yes, it’s necessary so that the epilator will pick up all the little hairs and actually remove them.

6. Moisturize Your Skin

After epilation (as with all hair-removal methods, really), it’s vitally important to moisturize your skin.

But along with regular lotion, try using a hydro-cortisone lotion to help sooth the red bumps that you might get after your first few times. This particular lotion has been my absolute favorite for nights when I epilate.

Also, using aloe instead of paraben-filled lotions will be more helpful and soothing to your skin.

**My favorite post-epilation cream!

**Great to use the next day for constant moisturization

7. Use Ice Afterwards

I no longer really need this one, but if you’re trying epilation for the first (or even second) time, I’d highly recommend putting some ice on your skin afterwards to help soothe and reduce redness.

8. Keep Doing It

It’s going to hurt the first time. And the second, and the third – and honestly, every time at least for awhile. But my best advice would be to keep doing it regularly – the more you do it, the more used to it your skin will become and it’ll start to feel much less painful.

Conclusion: Epilation Tips

Since I’ve started it, Epilation has quickly become my favorite bikini area treatment for hair removal. I don’t have to do it as often as shaving and now that my skin is used to it, it doesn’t leave as many bumps or ingrown hairs as shaving either.

Have you ever tried epilation? Let me know in the comments below!

I have never tried this out before. I usually just shave and I don’t like shaving. I will totally try this out. Great tips.

I feel the same way, especially with the bikini line. I will warn you though that the first time you try epilation, you’ll probably be a bit red and bumpy (totally normal.) Now that I’ve done it more, it doesn’t have the same side effects and I don’t always need ice afterwards. But start slow! Give your body some time to adjust. And definitely let me know how you like it!

Ooo epilating is such a good idea! I’d be really interested to try it as I can’t wax for 6 months post-accutane and I hate shaving x

Before trying it I’d suggest making sure it’s not going to be a problem after accutane (I’m not familiar with that so just double check with your primary!)

Ha! I’ll say, the first two or three times I did it I had a similar feeling, but I still thought it was better than waxing. Now that I’ve done it more though I’ve gotten used to it.

Fab tips! This sounds like such a great type of hair removal once you get more into the swing of it, and I love that you suggested using ice the first time – I never would’ve thought of that! Lying down sounds super helpful too. Thanks for sharing!

It is SO helpful! That would also apply to anyone wanting to try waxing – Ice helps with redness and swelling plus it’s just soothing
