10 Fall Wardrobe Essentials
This time of year brings with it falling leaves, cooler days, and a calmer, more peaceful atmosphere than the frenzied excitement of Summer.
Your wardrobe, too, will reflect that with cozier outfits in richer, warmer hues reminiscent of the colors outside.
Think colors like amber, gold, russet, and olive.
Of course, fashion is always subjective, so while your individual style preferences may differ from mine, there are certain basic staples that you should have on hand now that Autumn is upon us.
Here are my top 10 Fall wardrobe essentials:
1. Jeans
Jeans are an absolute must-have for Fall – they might be basic, but they’re a classic for a reason.
Personally, I’ve always loved a good pair of dark, skinny jeans but it seems that nowadays loose-fit denim is all the rage. Think boyfriend jeans, boot-cut, wide-leg, or just straight up baggy jeans for this season.
And from what I’ve seen, it seems that both light and dark-wash jeans will be the go-to in 2021 whereas black, grey, and middle blues are dying. (I’ll happily get rid of my skinny black jeans, but I’m holding on to my Millennial roots with the dark-wash skinnies!)
2. A Good Pair of Leggings
Let’s be honest here, leggings are pretty much a year-round staple. Especially after this last year – I think most of us damn near lived in our leggings (I know I did!)
But Fall is quite possibly the best season for leggings. When the weather can easily fluctuate and you may go from wearing short-sleeves one day to a sweater the next, you need a wardrobe that’s equally versatile.
I recommend getting these from Boody – they’re made of bamboo so they’re insanely soft and comfy for those lazy Fall days.
3. Oversized Cardigans & Sweaters
One great thing about Fall is that the weather isn’t cold enough to need to be completely bundled up, but it’s chilly enough that you can still stock up on cozier clothing items. Oversized cardigans and sweaters in particular are really cute, especially when paired with slim-fitting pants.
For an extra touch of Autumn flair, try to find chunky textures and tops in deep reds, burnt oranges, dark yellows, and all shades of brown.
4. Stylish Boots
Add some sleek black leggings, an oversized sweater, and a cute pair of ankle boots and what do you get?
The perfect Fall outfit for anything from a daytime hike to an afternoon coffee date. Then throw in some hoop earrings and you’re ready for dinner with your besties.
5. A Fun Fedora
Get your best Alexis Rose on with a good fedora or floppy hat for Fall.
Unlike the wide-brimmed sun-hats you wear in the Summer, Autumn hats are typically made from wool or felt so they’re a bit heavier and warmer.
They’re also more decorative and tend to make more of a fashion-statement.
In my mind, Fall hats are the epitome of Boho-chic.
6. Long-Sleeve Dresses
Speaking of Alexis Rose, you could pretty much take her as the poster-child for Autumn fashion with her collection of Bohemian midi-dresses.
The combination of long sleeves, light-weight material and leg-baring silhouettes make midi’s the perfect dress for the sunnier Autumn days. Florals can also be great for Fall – again, look for darker colors like burgundy or forest green.
7. A Zippered Vest
It may not be time to bring out the puffy coats for winter, but Autumn still brings a nip in the air, so having some zippered vests to throw on over a plain long-sleeved shirt is both stylish and warm enough for those Fall nights out at a bonfire.
8. A Sleeveless Turtleneck
Alright, I know this one sounds a bit weird, but I stand by it. Since it’s not quite cold enough to pull out your turtleneck sweaters, but it’s past the point where you can wear a regular tank top, why not combine the two!
Personally, I love pairing slim-fit jeans with a sleeveless turtleneck, dainty jewelry, and black ankle-boots for an elegant and sexy date night outfit.
9. A Good Pair of Sunglasses, Hoop Earrings, and an Oversized Handbag
To be fair, these 3 are all things you need for every season, but why not update your accessories for Autumn?
I love aviators for Fall – and since it’s not quite as bright out as Summer, you can get lighter colored lenses. Another great option would be square or cat-eye sunglasses with tortoise-shell frames.
With so many rich and warm shades of oranges and reds, I think gold jewelry is great for Fall. As for handbags, large totes in earthy colors would be my bag of choice.
10. A Knit Sweater Dress
While a good midi dress is suitable for September and October, once you hit November, you might need something a little warmer. Sweater dresses are the perfect solution. And for Winter, all you have to do is add a pair of tights underneath!

Alexis is definitely a fashion icon, especially for fall! Long sleeved dresses are my absolute favourite, as well as a lovely jumper 🙂
Yes same here!

Thanks for the help on what’s fashionable this Fall. I particularly love those boots! Thanks for sharing.
It’s always fun to shop for autumn and winter. I like the cozy vibes and looks. Great suggestions!
Thank you! The clothes are definitely cute but I’ll always miss the sunny days of Summer!
Really great suggestions you have here! I really liked both jeans . I was robbed two months ago and they stole lots of my clothes and and shoes and guess what…..all of my jeans!!!!
As long as it was summer I did not feel like missing them but now I do…. And the ones who suggest look souper cool! Will definitely check them out. Thank you ❤️
Oh man! That’s awful, I’m so sorry.
We’re so ready for sweater weather! We love a good sweater, leggings and boots for the season.
Same here!
Autumn is my absolute favourite season for fashion! All the cosy layers and jewel tones – gorgeous 🙂 Thank you for this guide – I struggle a bit with putting new outfits together sometimes and this is really helpful! Kate x
I always feel the same way, actually! I can easily put something together that I think would look great on other people, but then I wear the same thing and I’m not so sure. Maybe it’s a confidence thing, though.
I absolutely love those boots that you included in this post! I need a pair like that in my life!
I know! They’re so cute!
I love your picks! My go to outfit for this time of year is a chunky knit jumper with leggings and ankle boots. The only thing I don’t have on your list is a fedora. I’d love one but I have the tinyest head and can only wear kids hats hahahaha. Maybe some day… Loved your post girl 🙂
I had to look up what a “jumper” was – lol. I love chunky sweaters too and leggings are always a must. I practically LIVE in leggings.
I’m actually the same way with hats – it takes a lot of looking around to find ones that look good on me.
My favorite fall pieces nearly always involve sweaters and cardigans, as I love something warm that is not too bulky!
Boots and scarves are also a must, but I never thought about weaving hats into my fall looks. The GIF from Schitt’s Creek says it all for me though. 🙂
Thanks for sharing!
YESSS! Alexis Rose is my Boho fashion icon!
Great list of fall essentials. I love skinny jeans, but I’m also trying the loose-fit denim trend. I really like that flowy tunic dress – perfect with boots and a nice fedora hat.
Yes! Such a cute idea! I haven’t gotten any loose-fitting jeans yet. I’ll probably cave and give it a try though because it does look super cute on other people.
Love the ideas especially the hat. Olive color is a great one. Boot cut legged are back. Great and latest trends you captured and Amazon picks are wonderful. Loved those zipper sleevless jackets. Xx

I know, the hats are so cute! I’m alright with the boot-cut, I guess… I still love skinny jeans.
Fab suggestions! I love wearing my jeans and oversized sweaters in the Fall, haha. I’d really love to get a sweater dress soon too – I’ve never owned one before but this might be the year! Thanks for sharing x
Sweater dresses are soooo cute and comfy! I love them – I have so many Fall/Winter dresses. Probably even more than Summer dresses to be honest.
This is a wonderful list – my favourites are fall boots with a small heel, as well as knitted cardigans with scarfs! Our weather has been all over the place so I’m not yet ready to switch my wardrobe yet, but give it a week or two and I will likely be doing so! Thanks for sharing this.
I’m in the same boat – I live in the Midwest so… it’s not “Fall” here just yet. Still regularly in the upper 80’s and 90’s, but when it switches, it’ll do so real quick.
I’m all about the chunky knit sweaters and brown boots! I have just updated my wardrobe a little bit with some Fall favourites and I am so ready for the weather to change so I can wear them. I love all your suggestions and will be adding some of them to my list of further clothing updates!. Thanks for sharing!
Yes! I LOVE chunky sweaters and boots. I love being comfy so Fall is a great season for a cozy wardrobe. So glad that you found some of my picks useful! Definitely @ me if you end up getting anything – I’d love to see it!
